Birkenstocks Are Happening
03 β’ 18 β’ 2014
Too soon you say? Sorry, girls, but it’s time to ditch our thongs (sandals, that is) and get behind the 90s Birkenstock/Adidas shower shoe trend. For Spring/Summer 2014, it’s all about chunky slide sandals, not the gladiators or thong sandals of yesteryear. Here’s a BeautyNow guide to help you navigate the Birkenstock trend:
Birkenstocks look equally good with loose pants or frayed denim shorts, and bonus: the chunkiness of the sandal makes your legs look thinner. Somehow Birkenstocks go well with winter coats too, so they will help transition your wardrobe during this unseasonably cold spring. Oh, and they are comfortable, if you care about that sort of thing. Here’s some Birkenstock inspiration:

Paired with fancy track pants, another 90s-inspired trend right now (from mydubio.com):
With a winter coat, from sarahstrand.no:
More fancy track pants and Birks (jelamard.tumblr.com):
You know those Adidas plastic slides that you wore to shower in your college dorm? Yeah, those are hip now too. (Proof? See lookbook.nu below)
Now, please do not go rooting around in the closet of your childhood home in search of your beat up Birkenstocks that you wore circa Woodstock ’94 or Rockfest ’97 (for my DFW friends!) Here are some current (read: less dirty) options:
UPDATE: check out my post here about fabulous patterned and metallic Birks!
They still sell the classic Birkenstock ‘Arizona’. Β Get the black or the white.
Black pony-hair Birk lookalikes from Steve Madden (the ‘Boundree’):
These nailhead-studded ones from Giambattista Valli or the furry ones from Celine arguably reignited the Birkenstock trend last year:
If you are in the market for high-end slides, Net-a-Porter has a whole page of fantastic options.
So which slide sandals will I be sporting in Summer 2014? This shiny black pair from Zara— they are sort of a hybrid of the Birkenstock and the shower shoe. Here I am trying them on at Zara:
FYI I also ended up buying that white knit midi skirt, and I am aware that the outfit on the right looks more like a vintage apron than a dress.
So don’t be all closed-minded about the Birkenstock trend! Remember how you felt the first time you ditched your bootcut flare jeans for skinnies? This is just like that. But more comfy.
