BeautyNow's Drugstore Beauty Finds!
04 β’ 15 β’ 2014
There’s nothing like a little drugstore gem to perk me up! Sick with a nasty cold, I ran to CVS the other morning to pick up medicine and couldn’t resist making a little detour to the makeup aisle. As per usual. Anyway, I really scored on this drugstore run because I discovered some GREAT cheapo products! I’m excited to share the best drugstore makeup and other new drugstore finds:
[There’s Wade’s hand trying to steal the makeup off my bathroom counter as I snap the photo. Quit it!! LOL]
CoverGirl Clean Whipped Creme Foundation:
Y’all, this is the best drugstore foundation I have ever tried! Seriously, you have to try it. It is a dupe for my current fave foundation, high-end Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation. The CoverGirl Clean Whipped Creme Foundation is a dead ringer for Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua in terms of its coverage level, superior blendability, and invisibility on the skin. The CoverGirl Clean Whipped Creme Foundation comes in a little glass jar, which I usually associate with a heavier foundation for dry or mature skin, but this creme is a different consistency than anything else I’ve found. It is an airy gel-creme that blends so easily and feels like velvet. (I’m not sure if there is a silicone making the velvety texture, but usually products with silicone [like the Smashbox primers or Loreal Revitalift MiracleBlur] break me out, and the Clean Whipped Creme does not).
This foundation works perfectly for my combination skin- it seems to control the oil in my t-zone a bit and disguise pores, but it does not crease or look dry in my eye area. The wear time is amazing, and does not require a primer. I put a few dabs on my t-zone and all over my eyelids/eye area to brighten up and cover discoloration, and it blended in so easily with the parts of my face that I did not put the foundation. This stuff is seriously great!
The biggest problem with drugstore foundation is no tester to find your perfect shade. I lucked out on the lightest shade [Ivory 305], which disappears perfectly into my fair skin with yellow undertones. I would recommend buying a couple shades from Ulta or Target and keeping your receipt so you can return the shade that does not work for you. Verdict: if you are looking for a new foundation, pick up the CoverGirl Clean Whipped Creme Foundation on your next grocery run!
Shea Moisture Organic Yucca & Baobab Thickening Shampoo:
It’s hard to find a drugstore sulfate-free shampoo! If you have tape-in extensions like I do, they recommend you use a sulfate-free shampoo. I have been using Loreal EverPure Shampoo and Conditioner for a few months now, but I felt like I was getting buildup in my hair and needed to alternate with a different shampoo. On a whim I picked up Shea Moisture Organic Yucca & Baobab Thickening Shampoo since the label said it was supposed to boost volume and strengthen fine, weak hair. It has a pleasant, vaguely floral scent and is very slippery and sudsy, which I like! It is paraben and other scary chemical-free, if you get riled up about that sort of thing. It did not magically transform my hair into Gisele’s main, but it volumized as well as EverPure and most other volumizing shampoos I’ve tried. All in all, a good drugstore sulfate-free shampoo.
Revlon Colorstay Longwear Nail EnamelΒ in Starburst:
I swear by Revlon Colorstay Longwear Nail Enamel— it stays chip-free longer than OPI, Essie, Sephora Formula X, or basically any other brand I’ve tried. This is probably the seventh shade I’ve bought from this line. My only gripe is that the nude shade I have (Pale Cashmere) comes out streaky, but every other color I have is amazing. Can’t wait to try this orangey-red, Starburst.
UPDATE: not sure I would recommend the Starburst. I was surprised to find out that the color is sheer, not opaque like I was expecting. It was neat and sort of retro, but it chipped after a couple of days, so it did not have the wear time of the other shades of Colorstay I have tried. Here’s a pic on the first day:
Vaseline Lip Therapy Rosy Lips:
It’s so darn tiny and adorable! I’ve wanted to try this out for awhile, and this lilliputian jar of cuteness did not disappoint. I’ve tried a million lip balms, and I think Vaseline works just as well as any. And I loved the subtle rose tint and delicious rose scent. It did not smell petroleum jelly-ish at all! Also I much prefer the texture of Rosy Lips to cult favorite Smith’s Rosebud Salve.
Here I am wearing Vaseline Rosy Lips (and also the Clean Whipped Creme Foundation):
Physician’s Formula Bronze Booster Glow-Boosting Beauty Balm BB Bronzer SPF 20:
Congratulations, Physician’s Formula: you have created the longest product name in history! This bronzer has SPF for sun-protection, which would be great for reapplying at the beach! (Y’all know you have to reapply sunscreen every two hours, right? What a pain, but worth it.) Since you are supposed to reapply sunscreen, I like the idea of a powder that won’t mess up my makeup like reapplying a cream would. I have tried other powder sunscreens (like Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral Powder SPF 45), and my skin was allergic to some chemical and I got a little eczema. I did not have any reaction with the Physician’s Formula, which was great.
The light tan, non-sparkly bronzer is perfect for paler skin tones. My one complaint is I do not think the color lasts quite as long as my usual Laura Mercier bronzer. And I have been using this for a couple weeks now, but I’m not sure I have noticed any of the BB cream benefits like smoothing my skin and anti-aging.
I hope you pick up some of these gems on your next drugstore run!
